I would like to thank the Drum Cafe for another exciting experience with their performance and direction in opening up a whole new dimension in the meaning of school assemblies (or any human gathering for that matter). After my first experience with the Drum Cafe at the CADA Convention in San Diego (3/09), I knew we had to have them bring this unique energy to our middle school campus. From my first initial contact with their website at www.drumcafewest.com the process was easy.  It also helped in getting administrative approval with the wonderful videos from the website.  After my initial email inquiring the process and all the logistics of putting on an assembly, I was treated with enthusiasm and excitement for my interest in planning such an event for Las Colinas. Not only was a proposal developed in a timely manner, I especially liked the detailed Program Consultation questionnaire I was asked to fill out.  Once I had answered the questions, Nina, my primary contact and facilitator discussed these questions so that she had a clear idea of what we hoped our students would walk away from the experience with.

On Assembly day, the drums went out to the students in an amazingly short amount of time with the help of the wonderful Drum Cafe support people and our own volunteers. From the moment the kids sat down with their drums, the transformation began.  At first there is just a noise and not long there after the beginnings of a rhythm, and in the end there was a common voice in the music that resonated among everyone in the room.  Students and staff were swept up into the beating of the drums and they continue to talk about how great the experience was long after the day of the assembly.  Experience!  You can’t get away from that word because it is a shared Experience.  Something you become a part of and that is the best message I can share with anyone who is considering having the Drum Cafe on your school campus.  For our kids this also became a stress relief just before our state testing.  Staff and students alike were refreshed and energized from the experience. My other hope is that it will have an impact on our students that will carry through into the hallways of our campus in other ways. I am even considering starting up a Djembe club to keep the beat going on campus. The Drum Cafe is nothing short of amazing.

It’s not always easy for an organization to drum up support for its latest product or strategy, but one company has discovered a unique way to do just that. Drum Cafe, which has offices around the world, utilizes the universal language of drumming to help groups break down their barriers and align to a common goal.

David Graves, senior vice president of metroConnections, a Minneapolis-based event production company, has used Drum Cafe at least three times in the past and has another engagement coming up.

“One thing I like about them is that they’re able to adjust the program to what we’re looking for to meet the needs of the client,” he explained. “We bring them in when the client’s message is built around getting everybody on the same page, when we’ve got people from all over the country and now we need to get everybody thinking about the new product, the new direction or the new message.”

The Drum Café team begins the program by placing an African drum under the chair of each attendee before they enter the room. Then, as Graves explained, “We have the drumming start on stage, the doors open, and everybody floods in the room. It’s upbeat, it’s fun and it’s powerful drumming. Then they get in there and they find that there’s a drum at their spot.”

Graves described the dramatic way in which Natalie Spiro, director of Drum Café’s San Diego office facilitated one of his events. “She comes out on stage and for the first 10 minutes of the program she never says a word. The drummers are drumming and she’s pointing at the audience. She’s making facial gestures and demonstrating, but she never speaks. Within 10 minutes she’s got the whole room drumming together — one half doing one thing, and the other half doing another — and she’s got rhythms being created. It’s a really neat experience. Then they go into the messaging: ‘Look how easy it was to get all of you on the same page. That’s what we need to do.’?”

Graves continued, “It’s interesting and fun, and a great way to open a conference. It’s kind of funny to watch the group in the first few minutes. They don’t know what the heck is going on. Then once they start the program, they start to get it.”

Graves has done the Drum Café program for groups of up to 300, but he said they can accommodate much larger groups, as well. “You get caught up in their energy. If you want to go the extra step, they’ll take the group and really get them moving.” Graves noted that he has seen groups form conga lines because they were having so much fun.

Wood Middle School began the 2008-2009 school year with a Drum Café presentation in order to inspire teachers to come back and start the year energized. Wood began its second semester with part two of the Drum Café, where students were involved in a hands-on, interactive presentation by the Drum Café.  

The school's theme this year is "Engaging Minds, Enriching Hearts." Wood had three separate assemblies where students each used a drum while in the gym. Students felt the beat of the music as they began to actively participate in the pounding of individual drums. 

The program is designed to assist students in realizing how important they are to the success of our campus. Connections were made as to how each students' personal progress contributes to the overall campus achievement toward becoming a Recognized Campus.  

"It was exciting to see students and teachers side by side dancing, playing instruments and getting into the rhythm of the beat," said Diana Aguilar, assistant principal. "This beat will continue as we pound each TAKS assessment with inspiration, power and knowledge."

reminded me of a female you!  The energy, inspiration, knowing the audience, animation and love of performing was felt by all!  I kept this a good secret......very wise recommendation by you ........before the performance I was getting comments like "This better not be kareoke!"  "What do you mean by an "engaging" performance?"  etc.  I just loved watching the expressions on the faces in the audience once Kenya got going!  I do believe that drumming is a great way to deal with anxiety and stress.  We were laughing afterwards and saying that we should all have drums at school to use at will!  Needless to say, this was a hit.  The assistant superintendent turned to me during the performance and said that this was the best and he feels sorry for the person next year in charge of the conference because it will be hard to top this entertainment!   I am sure that calls will be coming in to have school site performances and teacher performances.  Some of us are looking at combining some staffs on our staff development day.  Would you be able to hold Monday, December 1st for Garden Grove Unified?  I will work on this and see about combining some teaching staffs to participate.  We are all waiting for our budgets to be finalized to look at some school site performances.  So I am glad that Drum Cafe came into my life and I will be in touch soon!

Drum Café visited our school at a most critical time and helped rebuild our team. My school is a high risk campus with many challenges for both students and teachers. Our needs were unique in that we have been able to produce modest gains in students’ test scores despite the many challenges of our at-risk school community, but after four years, my teachers were becoming fatigued and losing the inner spirit that drove many of us to this profession.

The Drum Café was able to remind our teachers of the importance of our profession through drums and music. Our staff was able reconnect to our core values and reminded us of our mission of school improvement.
