In today’s business environment, the challenges that leaders face seem limitless.  Still, there seems to be a central factor that distinguishes company’s that are growing and companies that are struggling.  Confidence in leadership abilities seems to be the key quality that characterizes leadership individuals in successful companies.

One of the most successful business reads on the market today is a book by Jim Collins called Good to Great.  Many leaders of the fastest growing companies in North America have credited this guide with some of their success.  After reviewing companies that have had impressive growth consistently over a 2 year period, Collins along with a team of 50 discovered that CEOs of these companies had one shared quality: they never questioned their leadership abilities.  According to Collins, “Level 5 Leaders” are not concerned about how well they lead and are not cocky but humbled and appreciative of their teams’ ability to rally behind a common goal.

Drum Café can’t promise to provide solutions to all leadership problems but we can teach a variety of skills that allow leaders to overcome politics and office diversity and unite, uplift and inspire your team.

What is the Drum Café Leadership Philosophy and How does it Define our Approach?
Drum Café facilitators take a multi-faceted approach to providing participants with valuable lessons for improving leadership.  We believe that the cornerstone of success is unity and we use music to promote the benefits of group cohesion.  Much of the work we do is non-verbal but specifically structured to quickly break down barriers between participants and to teach the integral role that each team member plays in group success.

By exploring a multi-sensory, creative approach that is universally understood among people of different backgrounds and cultures, participants in the Drum Café program quickly begin to understand that the highest levels of success are achieved when we work in harmony.  The language of rhythm is chosen because it appeals to our base instincts and it elicits more creative and varied responses than meetings or speeches alone can achieve.  People are more engaged and more emotional when they experience the Drum Café program and this makes the lessons learned more profound and resonant.  Meeting facilitators effectively demonstrate the leadership qualities we hope to proliferate and participants easily learn the implications of sound guidance.

Drum Cafe Programs are Mostly Action.

When you consider all the functions of a large company or organization, you begin to understand that there are a wide range of individuals with a diverse repertoire of skills and abilities that contribute to a common goal.  As such, Drum Cafe facilitators call on a range of faculties, from movement to expression to rhythm, in order to lead.  Leaders can learn to easily recognize when colleagues understand the message or not, the key is to developing the skills to present the message in different ways.  The Drum Cafe program is a reflection of the busy office environment.  Participants must assess and respond to a variety of sensory input in the moment without skipping a beat.  Orchestrate a large group on drums is not so different from orchestrating the dynamics of the business world.

Leading people in a Drum Café session requires overcoming individual differences and skills in order to achieve a shared goal of music.  Participants come from different functional aspects of a company, from different areas of the country, and sometimes from different parts of the world.  Still, despite all the differences and the hierarchies, the Drum Café approach reaches everyone and leaves a lasting impression.  Moreover, when the response is not unanimous or deviates from the set goal, we are forced to confront the mechanisms, cognitions, and biases that define our actions in order to guide our team to achieve success.

Drum Cafe strives to create a safe and positive environment where leaders can experience leadership challenges under a microscope.  Increasingly, the business environment is becoming a global one where leaders need to transcend culture to motivate and inspire their team.  You can even take the ultimate leadership challenge and put yourself at the center of the drumming circle we create.  You might find it uncomfortable to be at the center of a new and unfamiliar arena but emerging leaders are always willing to push it to the edge.
