This is why it is critical that we dust off the cobwebs and learn something new each and every day. We recently did an event with Microsoft’s Content Services and International team that was intended to give employees a chance to learn something new, bounce ideas around, and share skills with each other. The event was particularly interesting on the heels of a recent article in Forbes written by Bruce Kasanoff. Kasanoff said that many companies no longer view hiring top talent as a viable growth strategy; instead, companies are steering in a new direction—hiring hardworking people that do good work, have the potential and desire to grow, and invest in them to give them the resources to do great work. Microsoft is a company that truly understands that their employees are an investment worth making, and we’ve been honored and inspired by our work with their team. Their recent professional development workshop inspired us to look even further into the benefits of offering your employees the opportunity to evolve in the workplace. We came up with a list of three core reasons to implement individual opportunities for growth and continued learning into your work culture: 1. It lowers turnover rates. According to an article in Fast Company by Matt Straz, the employees that are worth keeping are the ones that don’t want to stop growing. Offering professional development opportunities keeps employees refreshed, educated and engaged in the industry. This shows them that your company is not stagnant and that there is room to grow within. 2. It sets high standards amongst other employees and new hires. When some of your employees begin attending workshops, conferences, seminars, or even furthering their education, many will follow suit, including (and especially) new hires. This sets the stage for an engaged work culture, which reflects positively on communication, performance, and business development opportunities. 3.
